Before you attack a stain on your sofa, find the manufacturer's tag โ usually under a seat cushion or on the deck. It has a letter code that tells you how the fabric can safely be cleaned.
W โ Water-based cleaners
The fabric can be cleaned with water-based products. This is the easiest code to clean, but over-wetting can still cause browning or shrinkage, so less is more.
S โ Solvent only
Use only water-free dry-cleaning solvents. Water can leave rings, spots or shrink the fabric. Many microfiber sofas are S-coded โ this is where most DIY disasters happen.
W/S โ Either
Water-based or solvent cleaners can be used. Professionals choose based on the type of soil.
X โ Vacuum only
No liquid cleaners at all โ vacuuming or light brushing only. Call a professional before trying anything else.
Tips for spills
- Blot, don't rub.
- Test any product on a hidden area first.
- Avoid colored cloths that can transfer dye.
- If the stain doesn't budge, stop โ heat and scrubbing can set it permanently.
