Lint is highly flammable, and it builds up inside your dryer vent every time you do laundry. The U.S. Fire Administration reports thousands of home dryer fires every year, with failure to clean as the leading factor. Here's how to tell your vent needs attention.
1. Clothes take more than one cycle
A clogged vent traps hot, moist air in the drum. If towels used to dry in one cycle and now take two, the vent is the first suspect.
2. The dryer is hot to the touch
The top of the dryer or the laundry room getting unusually hot is a sign airflow is restricted.
3. Burning smell
A scorched smell means lint may be overheating. Stop using the dryer and have the vent inspected.
4. The outside flap doesn't open
With the dryer running, go outside. The vent hood flap should open with strong airflow. A weak puff or no movement points to a blockage.
5. Lint around the door or hood
Lint escaping around the dryer door or piled around the outside hood means it has nowhere else to go.
6. It's been more than a year
Most households should have the vent cleaned at least once a year โ more often for big families or long, roof-exit vent runs common in Philadelphia rowhomes.
